Music You Can Move To
CantantiPROJECT’s CANTAMOS celebrates Spanish-language music
Come join CantantiPROJECT in celebrating the rich history and expression of Spanish-language music at one of the most captivating venues in Manhattan. Singers and instrumentalists, including members of the Dorian Baroque Orchestra, explore classical and popular music from Latin America and Europe, music that has inspired listeners for centuries with its passion and beauty - but also… really easy to move to!
Spanish language song has been able to cross genres in a way that most other classical music has not. The rich history of mariachi singing in Mexico, and the bold gestures of Huayno and Payada (or Paya) make the shift to classical singing more of a small step than a leap. The sultry rhythms of the tango and merengue are the springboard for exciting works; the gypsy music of Spain, African percussion, and folk instruments of South America all add magic and charisma to the passionate, sensual sounds of the language of love.
We’re very excited to have a chance to explore the repertoire - Spanish language song is just not part of the standard canon. As Artistic Director Joyce Yin put it, “As a vocal student in college, you were lucky if you got to sing one or two Spanish songs, by one or two of the Spanish composers your teachers knew of.” As an organization dedicated to introducing rare works to both our audience and our musicians, this is a wonderful opportunity for us to learn and grow in our artistry.
